MDR Symphony Orchestra
Germany’s oldest radio orchestra is based in Saxony, Thuringia, and Saxony-Anhalt—regions that can boast a musical history spanning centuries. From this area emerged composers such as Johann Sebastian Bach, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, Richard Wagner, Robert Schumann, Franz Liszt, and Kurt Weill.
The MDR Symphony Orchestra was founded in Leipzig in 1923. In addition to performing works by the great classical composers, the orchestra also presents their artistic continuations as well as contemporary music. Its repertoire includes genre-crossing projects, for example collaborations with Anoushka Shankar or the band Apocalyptica, as well as partnerships with composers such as Steve Reich, Tan Dun, and Arvo Pärt.
In 2012, the ensemble recorded the soundtrack for the award-winning film Cloud Atlas, for which the film was nominated for Best Original Score at the 2013 Golden Globe Awards.
Since the founding of the MDR Music Summer festival in 1992, the orchestra has been a permanent part of its program. Recordings by the MDR Symphony Orchestra have received numerous prestigious awards, including the Grand Prix du Disque, ECHO Klassik, and the German Record Critics’ Award.
The orchestra achieved a particular distinction as one of the very few ensembles worldwide to have performed at the Vatican before the Pope.
The Sorbian National Ensemble (Sorbian: Serbski ludowy ansambl) is the only professional Sorbian dance and music theatre in the Lusatia region. It consists of an orchestra, ballet, and choir.
Its repertoire focuses on dance theatre, music theatre, concerts, and musical theatre for children, ranging from traditional Sorbian works to contemporary and modern productions.
The Sorbian National Ensemble was founded in 1952 at the initiative of Domowina, the national umbrella organization of the Lusatian Sorbs. Supported by the Foundation for the Sorbian People, the ensemble’s three professional divisions preserve, cultivate, and further develop the cultural traditions of the Sorbian people.
